23 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 23rd September 1883. Ca’ Capello. (Sir Collingwood & Lady Dickson & Mr Colnaghi consul at Florence staying with us). Practised the hymns I have to sing in church & then went to church with the Dicksons & Mr Colnaghi & unfortunately we got there very late. After church we came straight home. Lunched at 1. At 3 I went out in gondola, left some notes & went to the church for the Litany service wh is a new one only begun last Sunday. On the steps of the house I found a clergyman & his mother standing consulting with Mr Mereweather’s servant as to whether we were eno’ for a congregation. The servant went up to consult & then came down & said there was so we went up & we 3 did the congregation. The gondola went back to fetch the others & they returned for me & we all went to Mr Malcolm’s garden & took a walk there & I made tea & we sat out & had it in the garden. Mr Malcolm himself met us there. We thought we were going to have a storm & the much wished for rain. We had to buy water yesterday. The clouds were fine & there was some thunder but it all blew away. Put up the flowers Mr M. had given me. We dined at 7. Expected Sr Richeri to dinner but he did not come & probably never got the note. Henry took out Mr Colnaghi & the Genl. in the eveng. Lady Dickson & I went early to our beds.
