27 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 27th September [1883]. Mr Colnaghi left this morning before breakfast so we did not see him before he went. I was quite as stupid at breakfast today as yesterday—but I am very unstrung as yet. I set to work at once to give out the linen before breakfast with the help of Regina who is very nice & anxious to help. After breakfast Lady Dickson & I were very busy till Lunch arranging & making a list of my jewelry. After lunch Mr Horatio Brown came to see me & came up to the studio. Henry took the Dicksons on foot to the Stabto. At 3 Mr Beaumont came & I took him to Guggenheims. I wanted to give G. a piece of old Toledo silk & Mr Beaumont wanted to see his things & have my advice on some things he thought of buying. We were there a long time. Met Mr Jean Paul Richter author of Life of Leonardo da Vinci on the stairs. I dont think he knew me & was the more confused as I was with Mr Beaumont. We went on to Richetti’s where I had never been before. I was terribly sad & low but I got through it somehow & duly gave my advice abt some ebony cabinets he wanted to buy. We went on to the Piazzetta & there found Henry & the Dicksons who were glad to have the means of getting home so we went straight home & had tea & then I laid down to rest & had a good roar of crying which did me good. Regina came in & tried to console me & we talked about Hill & her sudden departure. Lady Dickson & I remained at home & Henry & the Genl. went out together. Lady Dickson had a sore throat so I went to the kitchen & made her some arrow root & Regina made her a poultice.
