28 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 28th September [1883]. I woke with a headache but I managed to keep about. Lady Dickson & I went & turned out the work cupboard in the work room—& arranged a work basket for Regina– I felt so tired & sick I had to lie down for an hour before lunch & had to return to my sofa afterwards. Henry took the Dicksons out. I remained at home. The artist came to begin a copy of the embroidery in our picture by Gentil Bellini of the Sultan to illustrate Lady Marian Alford’s book. Had tea in the studio. The weather which had been still & heavy all day changed abt 5 & it got dark stormy looking & great drops fell– We hoped it wd rain but instead of it the wind got up & we had a wild night, lightening & wind but no rain. Miss Gordon came to see me in the afternoon & managed to get up to the drawing room. Since she has had typhoid fever she has always been carried up. We none of us went out in the evening. It was rough & chilly. Henry & I played cribbage in my room. After I had been in bed a little I cd not sleep as I had not eaten any dinner. I got up—went to the kitchen; made myself some arrowroot & found a bit of brown bread & went back to bed & to sleep.
