29 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 29th September [1883]. Got up as usual at 7 & had tea with Henry before dressing in my room– When he was dressed & gone to write I sat sewing. The door opened & he came back with a letter in his hands & said Here’s another pretty business! Giovanni writes me a letter to say he insists on leaving on 6th Novr the day he will have been 14 years with us. I said that he could not mean it and I wd speak to him. I dressed hastily, went down & called him & asked him what it all meant. He said it was true, he was determined to go. He cast in my teeth that I had sent away Hill & he was not going to wait to be sent away– He said I was rich & would easily find other servants & left me white with rage. I cd not help crying & telling him I thought it was hard he shd leave thus with out a servant in the house—but was too choked to say more & after calming myself down I went back to tell Henry who spoke to him again & said he must stop till we had found some one else & he consents & the house calmed down again for a little while– I feel that it is owing to Hill’s influence that Giovanni has been made discontented & I already began to regret her loss less. When shall we be quiet & settled again? The Dicksons spent the morng at the Correr Museum & returned to lunch. I wrote &c. After lunch Henry, the Dicksons & I went to the Lido. It was a lovely day and we enjoyed it very much. We went to the Quattro Fontane & took a walk on the sands. We took the bag with the tea & made our tea there and abt 5.15 we set off back to Venice. The sea was beautifully blue—the tide down & the distant sails of the fishing boats most picturesque. We dropped the Dicksons at the Piazzetta on our way home. Wrote letters till dinner time. After dinner Henry took the Genl. out. Lady Dickson & I retired early.
