30 September 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 30th September [1883]. I practised the hymns to play in church & the Dicksons & I went off in good time. I got thro it very well playing & leading the singing– After lunch had a visit from good old Dr Richetti. We talked to him abt the gondoliers & their %—& he said one of his reasons he had given up practise was the humiliations he had had to endure from the system of the percentage exacted by the gondoliers. At 3 Lady Dickson & I went to the Litany service and there were 14 in all so that we are improving; when we got back found Marquis d’Azeglio was here & as we were not at home he went up & the Genl. entertained him. Henry had gone to leave our cards on Pss William of Prussia at the Europa but he soon came back. Lord Campbell came to see Henry also this afternoon. D’Azeglio stayed to tea waiting on in hopes of seeing Mr & Lady M. Beaumont who promised to come to tea. They came a little late & so he only met them at the door just as he was leaving. Miss Wayland came with them & Miss Lyall also came to tea. Mr Malcolm dined with us– It was stormy & there was a little rain. No one cared to go out in the eveng so the gentlemen sat talking & I played the harmonium to Lady Dickson & we went early to bed.
