26 October 1883 — Florence | |
Friday. 26th October [1883]. Luigi the man recommended to us to replace Giovanni came at 10 & we finally engaged him & he is to come to us on 1st Decr. Mrs Ross came at the same time from Castagnolo & she & I went out shopping together & came back to the hotel at 12.30. At that moment a Sr Corsini came from Sir James Hudson offering to be our agent for the sale of Burano lace & we talked it over & are to consider it. Henry had been out & he came in at that moment & took Mrs Ross & me to lunch at Gilli’s. Afterwards she & I went to the bird shop & I bought a “Pope.” I also bt a pair of averdevats at the Zoo garden & Mrs Ross brought me 2 canaries as a present, a nightingale & a Japanese ditto wh she had bought for me. We returned to the hotel with the Pope and then Mrs Ross took leave of me & returned to Castagnolo. Henry came in soon after. Old Spence came to call at 3.15 & when he left Henry & I took a cab & went to leave some cards & returned to hotel at 5. Sir James Hudson came & stayed a long time chatting. Then I packed my box & Henry’s portmanteau. We dined at table d’hôte at 6.30. Cribbage & early to bed. | |
