13 November 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Tuesday. 13th [November 1883]. Busy in the house arranging things. Mrs Hewitt a rich American lady I met yesterday at Mrs Bronson’s came to call in the morning & I showed her Burano lace &c & she promised to order some. After lunch we went to meet the Hewitts at the Stabto which Henry showed them over & then we returned to tea. At 7 I went off to Mrs Bronson’s & accompanied her & Browning & Miss Browning, Miss Bronson & Miss Ker to the Marionette theatre to see a piece called “Lord Byron in Venezia.” Pss Metternich & her children came there also. The play was most absurd but rather difficult to hear & historical truth entirely ignored. Byron is supposed to be in love with a certain Margherita & Lady Byron suddenly arrives & reclaims her husband. There is a servant in white color stockings & a fez & a friend Gustav who seems to be a confidant & who sets with his tall hat on. There was a ballet afterwards– We went to Mrs Bronson’s & had supper afterwards & then returned home abt 10. I found Morelli arrived from Milan to stay with us. He had dined with Henry.
