16 November 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 16th November [1883]. I had a guitar lesson with Miss Bronson & she remained to lunch with us. During the lesson a note came to me from Miss St Clair saying she wanted to see Henry. I told the footman to take the note to Henry & beg him to answer it. I heard no more till at lunch Henry said to me, “Well what did you write to your friend?” I did not understand what he meant. It turned out that he had not understood the footman—& had scribbled at the back of the note some not very civil message to me to say he was too busy to attend to her &c– This the servant had given back to the messenger as the answer!! Of course I was horrified knowing how angry she would be at receiving back her own note with such a remark on it. I made Henry go to explain to her wh he did but had a little difficulty in smoothing her down. Css Pisani & her brother Mr Julius Millingen called. I had known him at Consple & he was treasurer to the Dorcas society. Mrs Brown also called.
