2 December 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 2nd December Advent Sunday [1883]. I took Coard to church & also went to fetch Emily R & took her also. I played the harmonium. Malgarotto came & I got him to draw me out the scale for doing my bust of Olga a 10th larger. After lunch Henry & I went out to the Piazzetta in gondola & took a constitutional in the Piazza while the band was playing & there we met Emily R & walked with her & then came home early as it was cold when the sun got low. Lady Evelyn Campbell & 2 Miss Buller’s came to tea and as we were talking it got dark and the wonderful light in the sky appeared again & we went up on the roof to see it. It got very brilliant & then a deep colour & then faded away. The English papers speak of it as being visible there & attributed to sulpherous vapories floating abt in the air from the eruption at Java. Dined alone for the 1st time for an age. Cribbage & bed early.
