13 December 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 13th December [1883]. No Olga again to sit. Lady Sinclair & her daughter came to bid us good bye as they leave for Rome tomorrow. I worked at bust. Css Marcello arrived to lunch with us at 1. We talked over the affairs of the lace school. Pss Dolgorouky came to call & to borrow some old work of mine which she wanted to copy. After she was gone I took Andriana Marcello to Pompea’s the lace seller near here to discuss making an arrangement with her to sell lace for us. The old lady was very voluble—declared she wanted to make no money & that for her it was sufficient to remain pura e honesta she wanted no money. She showed in rooms where she had girls at work making polychrome silk & common thread laces. We had to hurry away as we had to go on to Ersilia Canevaro. I left Andriana there & went to Stabto to call for Henry & then we fetched Andriana & took her to her house & she returned to the country by 5 o’cl train. Henry & I went to S. Moisé, landed & went on to the Piazza & fd our gondola at the Piazzetta & returned home to tea. Mr Brown called & sat some time with me talking. I wrote letters—one to Ld Cawdor abt arranging for him to get Emily R. to go to Florence to stay with his daughter Lady Evelyn. Mr Malcolm dined with us.
