17 December 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 17th December [1883]. No Olga again this morning so no work at her bust. Worked sewing machine. Had guitar lesson without Miss Bronson as it was raining & she did not come. Emily R. turned up before lunch & remained with me till nearly dinner time. Henry went out in gondola for a little while– Ersilia came to tea & sat talking a long time & we consulted abt arranging my garments for the winter– Wrote– Dressed for Dinner. Mr & Mrs Inglis Palgrave, Miss Barbara Lyall & Mr Horatio Brown dined with us. Mr Palgrave is the editor of the “Economist”—& brother of Gifford Palgrave & the editor of the Golden Treasury. He has somewhat the look of a dissenting parson & has a curious nervous laugh but he seems clever & is agreeable—tho’ slightly cynical.
