31 December 1883 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 31st December [1883]. Arranged the linen with Gigia. Had a guitar lesson. Miss Bronson did not come. After lunch Henry & I went off to the Asilo Infantile where Mrs Bronson gave a Christmas Tree. It is at S. Marziale. We found Mrs B. had not come so we walked up & down for ½ hour till she came. There were 200 children—all fat & well fed by Mrs Bronson & having jackets also provided by her. Pss Metternich, the Noyes, Mme Alice Buchtold & Mrs Budd—were there—verses were recited—bouquets given & then the children were taken to see the tree & had cake & apples administered. We left it still going on & I left Henry at the Stabto & went to the Zattere to leave cards on Mme Blaas. Mrs West was on Zattere & got into my gondola & had a chat. I fetched Hy & went home. Found a lot of lovely Christmas roses from Como sent me by Mr Horatio Brown– After dinner we went to the Canevaros to spend the evening & Henry played whist. At 12 Ct Canevaro brewed punch & we drank to each others happiness for the new year & then we went home.
