5 February 1884 — Paris | |
Tuesday. 5th February [1884]. Henry went to the Ottoman bank with Mr T. Bruce & I waited for Mrs Bruce & Elsie & went with them & Gigia my maid to the Louvre where Mrs Bruce bought a mantle– At 12.30 we came away having lost Gigia. We left her to find her way home. We met Dacre & all 4 walked to the Café de la Paix to meet Henry & Mr Bruce and to lunch. We had an excellent lunch & then Dacre returned to his work at Mr Hoskier’s office & I went off in a fiacre to Avenue Messini 25 to call on Mme Lacroix. I found her just out of her studio en blouse she called me upstairs & told me she had a cook for us she hoped. A lady came to call whose name I did not catch & when she was gone Mme Lacroix offered to take me out in her carriage & went away to dress. In a few minutes heard her calling me & went out & found her at her studio door & she asked me to go in. She has not yet finished the frescoes we saw begun last year but she has begun another panel with 3 figures on them. She showed me a portrait of a curé very rough & like but painted with talent & Mme Lacroix took me first to Mme DuCroquet where I tried on my dress then to drive in the Champs Elysées & finally left me in the Avenue Marceau where I searched for Lady Walsham’s house having forgotten her number & found her at 21. I sat some time with her & had tea & several people came in amongst whom was Mrs Crowe wife of Mr Crowe & Cavalcaselle. I finally returned in a cab to the Hotel nearly 7 o’clock quite tired out & went to bed almost directly after dinner. | |
