7 February 1884 — Paris
Thursday. 7th February [1884]. At 10 Mme Hurtado came to fetch me & we went off to shop at the Bon Marché. We had a little disagreeable there. One of the shopmen was rude to us & we reported him to the head man. We went on to the “Petit St Thomas another shop of the same kind where we got a few more things & then Mme Hurtado left me at our hotel. Dacre came to lunch. Afterwards he & I walked to Mme DuCroquets. I met Mme Lacroix there to see some of the gowns. She left me to try on dresses. I walked back to the hotel & found there I had lost my purse. It was very vexing. There was not much money in it but I was very sorry. I walked to Louvre gallery & met Henry who had managed to walk there with low shoes & gaiters on. We looked at the new Raphael Apollo & Marsyas wh Henry does not believe to be a Raphael & abt wh there is a great controversy. We then walked back to the hotel. Mr Hurtado came to call at 5 & I left him with Henry & went off to call on Lady Walsham whom I found at home—& I spent ½ hour with her & then hurried back to the hotel. We dined at 6.30 & went to the Palais Royal to see “Ma Camarade,” a piece wh has immense success. We thought it coarse & rather stupid tho’ it made one often laugh.
