10 February 1884 — Paris
Sunday. 10th February [1884]. The cook never turned up at 10 so we sent Luigi in search of her & they told him she was out for the day. Dacre came at 10.30 to fetch me to go to church but as I was not very well I cd not go. Wrote letters till lunch when Dacre returned from church & lunched with us. At 1.30 we went to Mme Lacroix’s house & she & her husband took us in their carriage to the house of Mr Stewart a rich American gentleman who has a fine collection of modern pictures. He has nearly half Fortunys works—some by Rico, Meissonier Madrazo—& a very fine collection. Mme Lacroix brought us back to our hotel at 3. At 4.30 I went in a fiacre to the Hurtados. Dacre met me there & I introduced him– We went on together to Lady Walsham’s & I introduced him there. Met a Mrs Wynn Finch, mother of Mrs Lawrence Oliphant who asked me a great deal about the death of Rawdon Brown. Met also Mr Carew of the Embassy & Capt. Newton a Queen’s messenger. Dacre & I returned home by 7 to dinner. At 9 Dacre bid us good bye & went away to his lodgings–
