9 February 1884 — Paris
Saturday. 9th February [1884]. I went & took a little walk in the morning & returned to go out with Henry at 11.30. We went to breakfast at Mme Lacroix’s & Dacre met us there. Miss Gordon was the only other person there. We went up to the studio afterwards & while there a message came that Mme LaCroix’s cook had brought a woman cook who would be likely to suit us. We interviewed her & settled to go at 6 to Rue Mansart to get her character. We then hurried back to the hotel and I got ready to go out with Lady Walsham who came to take me out driving. She took me to DuCroquet’s to try on my dresses for the last time & then we left cards & took a short turn in the Bois. She brought me back to this hotel at 5. At 6 Henry & I went off in a cab to Rue Mansart to get the cook’s character– The gouvernante was not in but she returned while we were there & gave me the best of characters of the girl so we returned to dinner determined to take her & begged them to send her to us tomorrow at 10. We dined at 6.30 & went to the “Français” to see a piece by Scribe “Bertand et Raton.” It was a piece abt Matilde & Struensee & the conspiracy wh upset him. It rained all the eveng but cleared eno’ for us to walk back to the hotel.
