15 March 1884 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 15th March [1884]. I walked out in the morning. Went to call on Lady Ely but did not find her at home. I returned to fetch Alice & Ola & took them shopping & on to Blanche’s & took her & the little girls out walking & then returned home to luncheon. Henry took Alice to the Sat. Pop Concert & I took Ola out in the carriage. The weather was oppressively hot. We went & left cards &c & returned to Savile Row to tea. Mrs Hillyar & Mrs Tharp, the Baron de Gary came to tea. Henry & I went to dine at Sir John de Gex’s & met a great many legal people such as Mr & Mrs Skirrow, Judge Justice Baggerly, Mr & Mrs Barrington Kennett, Lady Belcher, Mr Fergusson, Mr Sharf Director of Nat: Portrait Gallery &c. Sir John took me down to dinner & I had Mr Skirrow on my left. He was very agreeable & talked & I found he was a great friend of Richard Du Cane’s & my sister Maria. We became great friends. He told me he was intimately connected with “the Press” & offered to ask Labouchere to meet wh I declined. I told him that L. had so often villified Henry that I wished L. to forget his existence as he never could speak well of him. Skirrow told me that one day when he was calling on Lady Wolseley—Lord W. took him aside & said he had a favour to ask of him—would he ask him to meet Labouchere at dinner as he wished to make his acquaintance & Skirrow arranged a dinner on purpose wh however fell through as Ld W. was invited to dine with the P. of Wales. Skirrow arranged another dinner & Labouchere & Wolseley met at last. They had a long confab together & seemed on the most satisfactory terms. The next No of Truth had a slashing article against Ld W. We had some music in the evening of a feeble kind.
