29 March 1884 — 3 Savile Row
Saturday. 29th March [1884]. Was in all the morning. Alice walked out & got our books changed at the Grov: Gallery for me– Constance came to lunch & so did Mildred. Henry took Alice to the Sat. Pop. Concert. Connie walked out with Mildred but returned at 3 & then she & I went out driving together. We drove first to Marlboro’ House to write our names for the P. & Pss of Wales. There was such a crowd there that we had to wait a long time. At the door we met Baron Pawel Rammingen & he looked very miserable & said that in the D. of Albany he & Pss Frederica had lost their best friend. We found there Lady Stanhope, Pss Ghika, Ld Lamington, Sir Frances Seymour, Mlle Janotha &c &c. We went on to Buckingham Palace & wrote our names for the Queen & for the Dss of Albany. There were fewer people there as very few knew that H.M. had had a book opened. We went on from here to the Temple to have tea with Mrs Vaughan. Unfortunately I got a headache & could not enjoy it much. Met Sir H. & Lady Rawlinson, Sir L. Pelly, Mrs Fuller, Lady Tavistock & Mr Williamson– The latter was the great friend of Dean Stanley and we had never seen him since they were both with us at Madrid years ago– We spoke together of our dear friend the Dean– It was nearly 6 when we got home. I had such a headache & I had to keep on the sofa dozing & when Henry, Alice & Mildred went in to dinner I went upstairs to bed– The girls came up stairs in the eveng by turns & sat with me.
