30 March 1884 — 3 Savile Row
Sunday. 30th March [1884]. Alice went to spend the day with Connie. At 11 Henry & I set off in the brougham to drive down to spend the day at Roehampton. We stopped at 12 Purvis Gardens to get my little Cockatiel from Miss Ella Drake & took it with us to Roehampton to be taken care of for us by Ola. We found Maria at home & most of the others at church. After lunch Henry & Richard walked over to Wimbledon Common to enquire after Sir Bartle Frere. I & Maria took a turn in the garden & then came in. I also took a turn or two with Richard & then came in for tea. Mrs Austin walked up from Ravenna Rd to tea. Mr Wylde also came. Temmy stayed to dinner. Ola & Nela played the piano in the evening & at 10.30 Henry [& I] set off to drive home. The weather had become a little milder & it rained a little. On the hall table on our return I found a note in Ivors handwriting wh surprised me & opening it I found it was to say that he had had a telegram from our mother late last night saying Mr Schreiber had died at 4 that day & that she was coming home immediately. It was a shock wh one could hardly believe as she had never mentioned Mr Schreiber’s health when writing to us wh tho’ it seemed strange did not prepare us for so sudden an end. We passed a disturbed night.
