4 August 1884 — La Punta, Longarone
Monday. 4th August [1884]. Breakfast at 7.30. At 8 walked down to the mills where we found a little carriage waiting for us & we drove to Zoldo. It was a magnificent day but rather hot & we had a miserable little horse who could not drag us up the hills & we had to get out & walk. We got the post before leaving and letter from Alice to say she & Arthur had reached home safely last Wedy without any trouble. Papers says cholera is very much diminished & seems to be dying out of France. We got to Zoldo abt 11.30 & found at the Albergo degli Alps Mrs West, her daughter Fan & the 2 little ones & her niece Miss Eager, also Mrs Nightingale & 2 Miss Nightingales. Sat in Mrs West sitting room knitting and talking for an hour & then lunched with them all– Went up again to Mrs W’s room till 4 when Henry & I started back to La Punta & got to the mills abt 6.30. Dined at 7.30 & sat out on the terrace. Splendid moonlit night. To our surprise Mr Horatio Brown walked up. He & his mother were sleeping at Longarone on their way to Auronzo. He stayed chatting some time. I walked across the river with him to show it him by moonlight. When he was gone Henry & I played cribbage.
