14 August 1884 — La Punta, Longarone
Thursday. 14th [August 1884]. Henry was ill again in the night. Painted flowers all the morning– Had breakfast upstairs at 10. Dressed—packed. Dined at 3. At 4 we started in Mr Malcolm’s carriage to drive to Conegliano. The weather looked unsettled but it did not rain till just as we got close to Serravalle. We changed horses just beyond Sta Croce but otherwise never stopped again till we got to Conegliano. The rain did not last but a distant storm seemed to be raging & there was lightening. We got to Conegliano when it was quite dark—8.30. We drove to the station. We found a concerto musicale going on at the café at the station & having to wait till 10 for our train, sat out & enjoyed the devertimento & I had coffee. At 10.15 we started for Mestre– There we were met by our servant Luigi who came from Venice. Cortelazzo came with him to tell us all about how he had won his appeal against the sentence given against him at Vicenza where he was accused of having caused the death of his contadino by having arsenic about. He was in high spirits. He & Luigi had to go back to Venice after 10 minutes. We had to wait till 11.40 so we got something to eat. We had coupé lits in the train for Milan. It was a very hot night & a tremendous storm raged all round till after we left Verona.
