20 August 1884 — Varallo
Wednesday. 20th August [1884]. Called at 7.30. Breakfasted in our room at 8. Went out walking after breakfast first to the Parish church of S. Gaudenzio to see the Altar piece by Gaudenzio Ferrari a very fine picture in 6 compartments. There was also a picture in the sacristy by him spoilt & restored. We went on to the church of the Frate to see the frescos by Gaud. Ferrari. A little chapel dedicated Sta Margharita di Cortona has beautiful frescos by him dated 1515. The whole roof & very pretty [illegible word] in chiaco scuro. The partition wall between the church & choir is one vast fresco divided into 21 parts & representing the life of Christ is one of Gaudenzio Ferrari’s finest works & is preserved as fresh as if it were only just painted. We sat a long time in front of it examining it thoroughly. It is wonderfully beautiful. A curious thing we remarked is that all the feet in it are ill drawn. We went to the Labarotorio Barolo to ask to see a picture by G. Ferrari there is there but found it was hid away for the moment while they are preparing for the 4th centenary of G. Ferrari wh is to take place next month. So we returned to the hotel after taking a little walk in the town to see the part wh is over the torrent & is very picturesque. We lunched at 12. I painted flowers till 3.30 when we went off for a drive in a little carriage. We intended to go to the Ponte della Gula but it came on to rain & we had to get out at a little wayside inn & take shelter & as soon as it cleared we hastened back to Varallo. I painted flowers & read aloud Lecky. Dined at 7. Cribbage.
