21 August 1884 — Varallo
Thursday. 21st August [1884]. It was raining hard when we got up at 6 this morning but we had a closed carriage to drive to Arona. We went by Borgo Sesia & turned off at Borgomanero thro’ a valley to Arona– The road was new & rather heavy & there was a long tunnel to go thro’ when we got to the highest point. We went thro’ Valduggia the birthplace of Gaudenzio Ferrari a very picturesque village & happily the rain ceased & altho’ the sun did not come out it became fine & pleasant & the valley was beautifully green. We reached Gozzana abt 10 & there breakfasted & changed horses & got abt 12.30 to Arona. Having ½ hour to wait for the steamer to Baveno we ran off to the parish church to see the picture by Gaud. Ferrari but the Sacristan was away & altho’ several old women took much interest in our wish & ran in all directions in search of the sacristan he was not to be found. The curtain covering the picture was locked & we had to give it up & return to the steamer. We got to Baveno shortly before 4. Soon afterwards we had a visit from M. & Mme Cairoli, Mme Castellani & Signor Napoli & we are invited to spend the afternoon & dine with the Cairolis at Belgirate on Sunday. We met the Colnaghis at table d’hôte at 6.30 & sat out in the garden after dinner. I read aloud to Henry & cribbage.
