29 August 1884 — Borgo Vico, Como
Friday. 29th August [1884]. Margarita—Ninina Brandolin’s little girl had brought me some flowers from the top of the mountain yesterday, amongst there was a gentian– I set to work to paint it. D. Carlo d’Adda left for Milan. After breakfast I went on with my painting. At 1.30 we all set off on an expedition to the Brianza to see a villa Tessera—I & Henry, Da Fulvia & Da Mariquita with Marchese de Pareto on the box in one carriage—Ninina, the Marchesa Cusani, D. Juanita d’Adda, young Girolamo Brandolin, & Ct Brandolin on the box filled a second carriage. It was a long pull up hill to get to the Brianza but there were lovely views. In abt 1½ hour we reached Tessera, we found the owner Signora Basevi at home & she received us very kindly– Her eldest daughter who is very handsome was there with her husband. The 2nd daughter unmarried is plain. There were several other ladies there. They took us round their garden. The house is built on the top of a hill & the gardens full of lovely flowers, hot houses, ferneries &c goes down to a lovely lake which is part of the property. We went back to the house & had Turkish coffee– Then Dona Fulvia sang & the daughter of the house also & abt 4 we went on our way. We had left Dona Mariquita at another friend (Mme Mainoni) & Mme M. & her daughter brought her to join us at another fine villa called Soldo. The owners were away. We walked up through the gardens to the house wh is on the top of a hill & where there is a splendid view. The gardens are beautifully kept up. The view expands on one side beyond the Lake of Como wh one does not see & on the other almost to Milan. We started back abt 5 & got to Borgo Vico soon after 6. Dined at 7. I played boccete with Morelli. All the Resta family came in the eveng & there was the usual “chouette” till bed time. Today’s post brought us a letter from our servant Luigi to give us warning. He leaves end of Sept. a great bore for us.
