28 August 1884 — Borgo Vico, Como
Thursday. 28th August [1884]. We were a small party at breakfast as D. Carlo d’Adda & others had gone up the mountain opposite. After lunch I painted a thistle I had brought from Baveno. We had a cup of tea at 3.30 & then went out in the boat—Dona Mariquita, Dona Fulvia & the Paretos & Henry & I. We went to the Villa Taverna which is beautifully situated on the other side of the lake. The owners were not at home but we took a walk in the garden. We then returned towards Como stopping at the Villa d’Este to enquire if Dona Mariquita’s friend had arrived, as she was not there we came straight home– We found that the party who had gone up the mountain was home very fatigued with their exertions wh had not been small. After dinner Da Mariquita & the young d’Addas went to the theatre. Morelli & I played “boccite” & billiards. At 10 Signor Gromelli & his 2 daughters came to call from the Villa d’Este. We were all very tired. I left to go up to my room before they were gone.
