27 August 1884 — Borgo Vico, Como
Wednesday. 27th August [1884]. It was a cloudy morning when we got up at 7. We were to have made an excursion to Belaggio & Don Carlo d’Adda sent at 7 to ask if we felt inclined to go. Seeing the weather we replied in the negative & the excursion was given up. At 7.30 Henry went downstairs to meet Morelli to work at the new edition of Kügler. I wrote letters. At 11 we breakfasted. The Brandolins & Mme Cusani had gone out to breakfast so the party was reduced– After breakfast Henry & Morelli returned to work & the ladies sat & worked. Had tea at 3.30. The day had become fine; after 4 I went out in the carriage with Donas Mariquita & Fulvia. We drove to the Villa d’Este & I walked in the garden with Dona Fulvia & went over the public rooms of the hotel. It is very fine. As Dona Mariquita did not find the friend she went to visit we returned to Borgo Vico—stopped at the door of the villa to pick up D. Juanita & drove on to Como & back. Dressed & dined at 7.30. In the evening came Dona Fulvia’s family. She & her brother sang & then there was a great game of chouette wh lasted a long time & when I went to bed at 11.30 it was still going on.
