26 August 1884 — Borgo Vico, Como | |
Tuesday. 26th August [1884]. Called at 7 & tea in our rooms & dressed & went down at 9.30. Mme Fulvia was waiting ready to take us to Como in the boat. We met there her husband, Morelli, the Brandolins & Marchese Cusani & we went to the Cathedral where Morelli showed us the pictures by Gaud. Ferrari & Luini but the weather was dull & we could not see much. I walked back to the Villa with the Brandolins & it was 11 o’cl & we breakfasted at once. Sat & embroidered with the ladies afterwards. At 3 we had tea & there was an inroad of visitors, friends & relations of the d’Addas—amongst them Dss Visconti a very handsome woman past her premierè jeunesse. At 3.30 we prepared to start for an excursion on the lake. Mme Cusani, Da Fulvia & her husband, Ninina Brandolin, her husband & son & D. Carlo d’Adda. Just as we were seated in the boat great drops of rain came down & we scampered back into the house. It cleared a bit & the excursion was persisted in only we were not to cross the lake but only go to the Villa d’Este. It seemed to really clear & D. Carlo said we could go across to visit a Mme Milius who has a lovely villa. Just as we got there the rain began in earnest & a violent thunderstorm so that we were glad to be in the house & to find Mme Milius at home. She was a stout square built woman with marked eyebrows & rather vulgar manner but she talked amusingly & was very kind. Her garden is lovely & her house full of pretty things & very comfortable. She kindly proposed to lend us a carriage to go home so we 3 ladies & Henry went home in her carriage, the men returning in the boat. The storm cleared & the rest of the evening was fine. It was 6 when we got in & we dressed for dinner at 7. When I went down I found Henry reading the papers & he called out to me that Lord Ampthill was dead at Berlin. We were both very shocked– He was a kind friend & we did not know he was ill. What must it be for his poor wife. In the eveng the young d’Addas & Mme Cusani went to church to a [illegible word] they had asked for on acct of the cholera– They hope to avert the arrival of the cholera by this means—& from church they went on to the theatre! Morelli & I played billiards all the evening—the rest played “chouette” as a round game of écarté is called & we went early to bed– | |
