25 August 1884 — Baveno | |
Monday. 25th August [1884]. Got up at 7. At 8.30 we left Baveno in a boat which took us to Laveno on the opposite shore wh we reached abt 9. We found a carriage waiting for us & we had a delightful drive to Varese. It was not very hot & even seemed to threaten rain but we were fortunate eno’ not to have it. We lunched at the Angelo at Varese an old fashioned Italian inn. It was market day & the town was very animated. Abt 1 o’cl set set off again for Como & got there abt 4.30 & on to Borgo Vico where is the Villa of Signor & Signora d’Adda who gave us a hearty welcome. The Brandolin family were there also Signor Morelli arrived before dinner. They were staying in the house besides the son & his wife Mme [illegible word] an old Marchesa & Marchesa Pareto who were in a very dreadful state of mind as news had come that the cholera had suddenly broken out in Genoa. Their adopted niece was married to an officer of the navy stationed there—& they had written & telegraphed twice but had got no answer. They at once concluded that one or both had been struck down by cholera & sat & cried & everybody was in consequence very low. Abt 10 o’cl D. Carlo d’Adda rushed in with a telegram announcing the safety of the nephew & niece & a wild scene of joy succeeded the gloom– The old Marquis rushed at D. Carlo & caught him by the neck & kissed him frantically. All the ladies kissed the Marchese & there was general satisfaction. We dined at 7. There was billiards & écarté in the evening & Dona Fulvia sang to everyone’s admiration except mine & Morelli’s. To me her loud harsh voice was singularly unpleasant. Her mother, sisters married & unmarried & her brother & his wife came in the eveng having their villas also next door. Ct & Css Borromeo also came. She was a pretty gentle attractive woman– I went to bed early rather tired. | |
