6 September 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 6th September [1884]. Unpacked & arranged things. Set to work to draw the picture by Montagna downstairs in order to make a small copy of it. Went out after dinner. Splendid moonlight. Went to the Piazza. The King having arrived last night to join the Queen who has been here some time there were 2 bands on the Piazza & the Royal March was played & their Majesties had to come out to the acclamation of the people. We took a little walk & then went to see the Edens. Venice looks woefully empty. From here to the Prefettura along the Grand Canal we did not see a single boat. We never saw Venice look so deserted.
