15 September 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 15th September [1884]. I had a lesson of Desideri. Henry went out to Baron Cattanei’s funeral & to some of the churches to see different pictures in view of his work of Kügler. Dr Cini came in the morning as I had not been feeling well the last days & he gave me a prescription to take this eveng. Went out in the afternoon with Henry to 2 antiquaries’ shop to see if there was anything worth buying & found them in despair at not having sold a thing for 4 months. Copied Henrys M.S. After dinner went out to take a turn in Piazza. The band was playing. Saw there Rico the painter & another man walking with two vulgar painted models who were dressed in extravagant way & looked too horrid. It is curious to think he should be the same man who seemed so quiet when we knew him & his wife at Granada when we were at there with the Fortunys– The last time Rico was here he was living with Fortuny’s widow & seems now to have left her for these Venetian models—one is known as Carlotta. We went to Css Valmarana’s & Henry played whist till past 12. I sat & talked a long time to Mme Mimaut.
