14 September 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 14th September [1884]. I went to church in the morning. After lunch copied Henrys MS for him. At 4 went out to call on Pss Montenegro; she was out. Came home to tea [&] at 5 we went out to see the arrival of the body of poor Baron Cattanei who died at Treviso & is to have a public funeral. We went in to Biraghi’s house to see the work he is doing for Ivor’s new staircase at Canford—& then we followed the funeral as far as the Municipio where the body was deposited for the night. There were a great many gondolas & 2 steamers full of people wh took away from the picturesqueness of the scene. Copied M.S. Dined 7.30. Went to the Piazza & took a turn & then went to the Edens. In the afternoon the racing boats belonging to the Società dei Bucintori went about on the canal, sounding bugles & going into every house to collect money & old linen for the “colorosi” sufferers by the cholera, at Naples. They got £900. The cholera is greatly decreasing at Naples & the thing has left the town but not before 2 deputies & one of his Ministers had taken the infection but are happily recovering.
