13 September 1884 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 13th September [1884]. I was having my lesson of Desideri when Mrs Eden rushed in breathless to ask if it was true about last night’s telegram & she was sorry to hear it was not. After lunch I went out to pay some visits but found no one at home. I joined Henry at the Piazza & we went to the Edens’ garden & spent some time with them & brought home flowers & fruit. Cortelazzo went home to Vicenza by the 5 o’cl train in very happy humour now he has no cares & the terrible sentence wh hung over him for 13 months has been removed. I read aloud to Henry in the evening and we played cribbage.
