3 October 1884 — Ravenna
Friday. 3rd October [1884]. Henry & I went out with our guide in the morning early to see the Picture gallery to study Luca Longhi’s best works wh are there but which did not strike us much– There is there a fine mosaic Roman pavement removed from a church once at Classe now disappeared– A magnificent recumbent figure of Guidarello Guidarelli—one of the most wonderful works of the kind I ever saw—one can hardly believe the marble is not a real corpse. Went to the library where are a great many curious ivories, bronzes &c wh are to be removed to a museum—& saw some of the fine MSS. Returned to the hotel. Lunched at 11. On the way to the hotel we went in to a small antiquary shop. The man asked absurd prices for everything. I saw a little old fan with a pen & ink sketch signed & dated to wh I took a fancy. The man asked 30 fcs I offered 15—wh he refused. Just before starting for the station I said to Henry that I would try & get the fan for 20 fcs so I ran off to the shop close by. The wife only was at home but she would not be of taking my offer. I returned to the hotel to be ready to go to the station & in 5 minutes– A messenger came to say I might have the fan for 20 fcs so I carried it off. It was a very hot day. We got to Bologna & went to the Hotel d’Italie. Dined at the Restaurant. Had an excellent dinner.
