2 October 1884 — Ravenna
Thursday. 2nd October [1884]. Breakfast at 8 & then set out, guide, Luigi & all to see the churches &c. We went 2nd to the Baptistry. We took Kügler with us & I read aloud the descriptions of the mosaics for Henry, while he made notes & corrections. We went to see the mosaics in the Archepiscopal Chapel, then to the Tomb of Dante, the Tomb of Galla Placidia &c & came back to lunch at 12. Afterwards we took a carriage & drove to the Tomb of Theodosius and to the Church of Sta Maria in Fuori where are mosaics & frescoes. We then returned almost to the city & drove round to St Apollinaris in Classe a great church where the fine mosaics & which once stood in a town—now entirely disappeared. There are canals leading to Cervia & the sea & the country looks marshy & unhealthy. We got back to the hotel at 4.30. I read aloud to Henry. Dined at 7. Cribbage.
