15 October 1884 — Perugia
Wednesday. 15th [October 1884]. Breakfast at 8.30 & then went off with Scalchi to guide us first to see M. Brufani’s new hotel up in the town. The view from it is lovely & it will be very comfortable. He will leave the present building next month & go there altogether. We went on to the shop of Lancetto the worker in tarsia & there we saw a very pretty table & Henry ordered one for me. We also bought boxes to give Arthur & Blanche. The agreement we made with Lancetto is that my table is to cost 230 fcs when made & the legs are to have a little decoration to them. We went on to see at S. Severo the fresco by Rafael & Perugino– Then thro’ the old Etruscan gate to the highest point in the city to see the view which is superb. On to the University to see the Etruscan museum begun by Henrys great friend Count Gian Carlo Conestabile. A very intelligent gentleman showed us over the museum & when we left we thanked him & shook hands with him & then Scalchi told us that he expected a fee; we had not dared to offer him one but hearing that we sent back Scalchi with 2 fcs. Then we went to S. Augustin to see the carved choir stalls wh are very beautiful & had to hurry on– We went to 2 antiquaries. One had a fine appartment full of rubbish– The other whose name was Buonamancia a Jew had some good things of absurd price. Henry went back to Lancetto to give him final directions abt the table & Scalchi & I ran off to Count Monaldi’s house to look at some silks & furniture said to be for sale– They were not worth buying & we had to hurry back to the hotel to Lunch at 1. I went up to the Westenberg’s room for a little while till lunch & after lunch they came down & sat & talked with us till ¼ to 2 when we had to go off to the station & we went by 2.15 back to Florence. Arriving at 6.30 & went to Hotel Gran Bretagne. Dined & early to bed– Today it quite cleared up & the sun was pleasant & warm—but it was altogether warmer at Florence than Perugia.
