21 October 1884 — Lucca
Tuesday. 21st October [1884]. Got up at 7. Tea in our room. I was rather better but not quite recovered. We went with the old guide to the Duomo & to S. Giovanni & stayed some time in the Duomo wh was most interesting in everywhere & where one learns to know Civitali the sculptor. A carriage fetched us at the Duomo & we went [to] S. Frediano & on to the Picture gallery where I sat in front of 1st one & then the other Fra Bartolommeo while Henry went round the pictures– He found very little that is interesting except some portraits by Sustermans & then we drove round by the Guinigi palaces—the old Roman amphitheatre & some churches & then back to the hotel to luncheon– We had very good food served by a waiter in spectacles! At 2 Henry went out to the antiquity shops—I remained in & painted. At 3.30 we went out for a drive round the ramparts & afterwards to the cemetery. Henry got out & says the modern marble tombs are the best of the kind he ever saw– We returned to the Inn at 4.30—very much pleased with Lucca. I began to read Cherbuliez’s La ferme du Choquard aloud to Henry– Dined at 7. Cribbage & bed early.
