22 October 1884 — Lucca
Wednesday. 22nd October [1884]. Got up at 6.30 & left by 8 train via Pisa to Signa. At Pisa we were met by the man with the silk & paid him & took it with us. Lovely day & the scenery from Lucca to Pisa lovely. We agreed that Lucca is a capital place for any one not very rich, to live in. We saw a charming palace with a garden inhabited by an American Admiral (Perry) for wh he is said to pay about 26£ a year! At Signa Luigi met us with the Diavalinos carriage and we drove to Castagnolo & were hospitably recd by Mr & Mrs Ross. Had some tea & dressed. Regina was there & unpacked for me. Lunched at 1. Mrs Ross was painting orchids so I tried to paint a peperone a bright yellow one & did not succeed. Dined at 7.30. Mr Marzials the composer who is staying here but had gone for the day to Florence returned for dinner. Mrs Ross & he sang together some of his music in the eveng. We went to bed early. There were still mosquitos & we had to have m. curtains. The Marchese della Stufa was also at home.
