23 October 1884 — Castagnolo
Thursday. 23rd October [1884]. Breakfast at 8.45. Mr Marzials went off to Florence again. Mrs Ross & I painted all morng. It was very dull cold weather. After lunch Henry & I walked with the Ross’ to the Orsi to see Sr Leopoldo’s studio. He had some lovely fruit pieces. On the way home we picked wild cyclamen. In the afternoon the Signorina Orsi came to call. After tea Henry & I went up to my room & I read him the Choquard till dinner time. Count Pelagi, Dr Frazini & a very pretty little lady Mme Cappizati dined here. She is half Italian half English—ran away with an Italian whom she married & then soon after he went out of his mind & had to be shut up & she is left alone. She played the piano very beautifully & was altogether very attractive & nice. Ct Pelagi is the man who had a very pretty writing table like those used by the monks wh Henry offered to buy for me. He offered 600 fcs for it but Pelagi wd not give it & then Mrs Ross sent to say we wd give 650– He came down this eveng to clinch the bargain & gave it for that. He & the Dr returned to town by the last train at 10. Marzials & Mrs Ross sang. I also sang Spanish songs.
