12 November 1884 — Paris
Wednesday. 12th [November 1884]. Henry took me to the Louvre at 10 o’cl, & installed me before the Vierge au Pigeon to copy & then he himself worked at his notes for Kugler. There was a fog & at last it got so dark I could hardly see but I managed to draw in the picture & prepare the first washes. We returned to the Hotel to luncheon at 1. Afterwards I went out shopping taking a cab by the hour & called on the Hurtados finally going to 21 Avenue Marceau to see Lady Walsham who was at home. I sat a long time with her & had tea. Met there Mr Carew of the Embassy & 2 Miss Johnstons. When I returned at 6.30 to the hotel I found the Hurtados had been there waiting some time to see me & had gone just before I returned. We dined at the Embassy & met Col. G. Villiers & his bride (née Macquay) a pretty little brunette with very pale complexion—also Mr & Lady Aime Morgan (she the D. of Buckingham’s daughter) also bride & bridegroom, Mr Carew, Mr Herbert of Lea, Mr Austin Leigh & Mr Sheffield & Mr Blake who took me in to dinner. It was a dull affair altho’ Lord Lyons was kind & hospitable as ever.
