21 January 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 21st January [1885]. Mr Vigor came to try to paint & it was so dark he nearly had to give it up still it cleared a little & he went on– I drove out after lunch & went to Lady Gregory’s to see if she wd go out with me she was out but Sir Wm was in and asked me to look at his rugs & arranged with me to go rug hunting on Friday. I went on to Battersea Pk. to see Mrs Whyte the widow of our chaplain at Venice. She has grown very fat, old & blind. I found her 2 elder daughters there & 2 cats & an enormous dog, & it surprised me their keeping all those animals when they were so badly off. I came home to tea. Blanche, Mr Rate & Arthur dined with us. Henry went to the Duff Gordons to hear Mme Reyntiens sing. I played billiards with Mr Rate, B. went home early. News of a battle in Egypt & losses on our side.
