20 January 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 20th January [1885]. It was quite dark when we got up & we were not able to dispense with lamps all day. I wrote all the morning. Mrs Bagot came to lunch. I drove with Blanche. Shopped &c. Home to tea. Arthur who had returned on Sunday from America & Mildred & Maria came to tea. We dined with Sir Baliol & Lady Brett a large party. Mr Bennet took me to dinner & I sat next Ct Peper. Lady Malmesbury was there & was very friendly as she was at the dinner here we were at last year. Sir Andrew Clark, M. D. & his wife were there & he was introduced to me & I found him very amusing with his dreaded Scotch accident. He tried to get Henry into an argument on metaphysics & then theology wh he said was his great interest. Met also Mr & Mrs Frank Villiers, Helen Henniker grown a mountain of fat & Lady Henry Lennox who was all paint & diamonds & others.
