19 January 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 19th [January 1885]. I determined to remain in bed & have a rest today being still very tired. I wrote a lot of letters & Alice sat with me. Abt 12 Maria came to fetch Alice home. Edward came also with the news that their little girl Onie had got the measles & also Connies little boy Ernie. Later Mama came & said she had offered to take Blanche’s 3 smaller children in in hopes they wd escape the measles. I got up after lunch. Henry went out to call on Mme Reyntiens. Blanche came & sat with me a little while at tea time. I had a long visit from Mrs Bircham a most amusing 2nd rate lady but friendly & chatty. When she talked of the vulgarity of the Christy’s the hat makers & how far beneath her she thought them one was amused—but when she talked with tears in her eyes of a brother she had nursed who died at Venice one could not but admire & feel with her. Susan Hambro dined with us & we had a quiet evening over our work.
