18 January 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 18th January [1885]. Bitter day. Went to church at the Chapel in Westminster St where I took 2 sittings from today & heard Haweis preach an excellent discourse on the Parables of the Sower & the seed &c. Edward Ponsonby went to church with me. I went to see Mama before church & came home for lunch with Henry. Made cigarettes in the afternoon. Monty came to see me & sat an hour– Henry went out to see Sir Henry Rawlinson & also Kinglake who are both ill. Alice Du Cane who is staying with us went off after breakfast to join Annie Murray & go to St Paul’s & only returned by 5 o’cl tea bringing Annie & her brother Hallam to tea. At 7 o’cl I was so tired & knocked up that I made up my mind to go to bed & dine there. Alice came upstairs & sat with me some time in the evening.
