25 January 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 25th January [1885]. My cold so heavy I stayed in bed till after lunch & wrote a lot of letters. Alice who is staying with us went off to St Pauls in the afternoon with the Murrays. Dr Wm Smith came to see me later Lord Aberdare & Mr Willie Bruce. Also Evely & Granville Eliot, Blanche—Sir Henry Thompson & the latter stayed some time & was very pleasant. Henry, who had been out to see Musurus P & on to Lady May to enquire how they are after the shock of the explosion came in & said there were great crowds round the Houses—a strong guard of police & no one was allowed to pass except on business. The damage is calculated at £10,000. The Mays were sitting at lunch at the time & Sir Erskine rushed out to his private door to see what it could be. Arthur came to tea. Alice returned & Mme Reyntiens came also.
