24 January 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 24th January [1885]. I sat to Mr Vigor all the morng. Having a bad cold did not go out. Maria & her Alice & Daisy came to lunch. Henry took Alice to the Saty Pop Concert. Daisy went to Langham Hse to see Blanches children & Maria & I sat & talked. Maria went away to shop for a short time. To my surprise & delight Hobart P. came to call. He brought dreadful news of a terrible explosion of dynamite in the House of Commons. Blanche came in later & said she had been down to the House with Edward & seen the scene of devastation, that all the windows were blown out & part of the fittings of the house of Commons were gone. Lady Kemball & her little girl called also—& Mr Alexr Bagot & Miss Reddington. Henry came in later & said there had also been an explosion in the Town & several people injured. He fears terribly for the National Gallery. Mr Riaño came also– All the talk is horrid at the dastardly outrage. Men were rushing about the streets with specials & roaring out the news & there is general indignation. Edward came in to play billiards with Henry & described what he had seen– Great anxiety for news from Egypt.
