16 February 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 16th February [1885]. Dr Fuller came just after breakfast. I wrote letters & did accounts. At 12.30 I went round to see Blanche & on to Langham Hse, Maria was there also. Mama was much better. Every body in the family was in a state of excitement over Henry’s letter to the Times. Maria went back to luncheon with me. At 3 Alice, Henry & I drove out. After we had left Henry at the Nat. Gallery Alice & I went on to the House of Parliament to call on Lady May. As we passed down Parlt Street we saw a line of policemen drawn up across Downing St to protect the Ministers while a Cabinet Council was being held. Further on there was a small crowd of workmen with a placard & they were evidently being harangued. Found Lady May at home & sat with her some time. She told us stringent rules were being made abt admissions to the House of Parliament but she offered us her seats in the gallery wh we accepted for Friday. We went on to leave cards & shop & returned home at 5. Lady Gregory, Connie & B, Maria, Susan Hambro, Blanches 2 children Olwen, Irene & Vere came to tea. At 7 we went to dine with Mrs Bloomfield Moore at 12 Gt Stanhope St a rich American widow who has modern pictures, old china & curios of every description. She has a fine house in America also full of fine things & has given a large collection to a museum as well. We met Whistler the artist, two American ladies, 3 gentlemen, one of whom was Genl Sir Fred Haynes. As Mrs Marc had omitted to tell Sir Fred that we dined at 7 he did not arrive till 8 when we were half thro’ dinner. In the evening some American Ladies joined the party & amongst them one married to an English Col                who recited an American poem. His wife told me he knew 6 plays of Shakespeare on end & 300 pieces of poetry. At 10 we took leave & went to Mrs Rates as she had made me promise to do. We found her & Lady Lovelace just come in from church & Mr Rate came later & so we stayed a little while for a chat.
