15 March 1885 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Sunday. 15th March [1885]. There was a dense yellow fog, we doubted whether we should go to church. However Alice & I settled to try. On opening our street door we happened on Edward going to church with Onie so Alice went with Edward to St Annes & Onie & I went to Haweis. We had a very curious sermon on Gordons. He held him up as a great example & said that Gordon’s death was to be accounted for by the stupidity of man & not by the fault of the Almighty. Returned home to lunch. Mr Ernest Hunt came to call before lunch & Mme Reyntiens, his little boy & Arthur came to lunch. They remained till 3.30 then went away. Alice also returned home. I sat alone & wrote all the afternoon. Mr Rate came to tea. Henry returned abt the same time from a visit to Lady Somers. At 6.30 we drove down to Roehampton to dine for the last time at Exeter House as Maria will be leaving it by 8th April. Mr Wylde dined there & was very entertaining. We drove home abt 10.30.
