9 April 1885 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Thursday. 9th April [1885]. I painted & worked & walked with Henry. While I sat in the drawing room abt 5 o’cl. waiting for tea I heard a good deal of going to & fro & presently old Lady Westr came in & said Theo had had an accident out hunting but she did not know what. Later it came out that just toward the end of the run in going thro an open gate her horse swerved against the gate post & her leg was broken. Dr Wiblin who was expected today from Southampton to spend a few days arrived here just at the moment Theo got home. It appears that she was some 8 miles off when she had the accident & they sent for the carriage for her but when it got to her they did not know how to get her into it so she decided to ride at a footspace all the way. In the village of Henstridge she stopped at the Doctors house & told him she wanted him to come up to Inwood to set a broken leg– He asked her whose leg it might be & she said “Mine” The Dr took it for a joke as she was on horseback. However he found it was quite true when he got to the house with his splints. Merthyr hearing of the accident rode quickly home & was at the door to lift Theo off her horse & carry her up to bed– Wiblin & the village Dr were also ready to set it & Theo was said to be doing very well & every body was amazed at her pluck. Mr & Mrs Digby Collins dined at Inwood. Mrs Collins had ridden home with Theo & said she never was faint or overcome [the] whole way.
