10 April 1885 — Inwood, Henstridge, Somerset
Friday. 10th April [1885]. Theo saw me in the morng & said she had passed a good night. I went to Templecombe by 11.30 & then Luff met me from Blandford & took me to spend the day at Bath. We got there abt 1 & walked from the station to Duke St (11) North Parade where Temmy is staying with her old friend Miss Oliver. It was unluckily a grey day & a little rain falling. Miss Oliver gave us lunch an excellent Devonshire junket made by herself. At 2.30 all 4 went for a drive to see the town & to the jewellers shop Mallett in Melsom St. Bath struck one as a charming town beautifully situated in a basin of surrounding hills. Unfortunately it rained & we had to keep the carriage shut. We went to see the Pump room & tasted the iron water wh is hot from the spring. It was refreshing to see the scenes of the fashion of last century & the glory of Beau Nash & we should have liked to have spent more time in the town but we had to leave by a 4.30 train– On the way there & back Luff & I had a long talk over my family & old days. At Templecombe we parted—he returned home to Blandford & I found the carriage to take to Inwood. Merthyr had been hunting in the New Forest & came in at the same time. I had my first lesson in whist this evening as Merthyr went up to set with Theo & I played with Lady Westr—Henry & Dr Wiblin.
