18 July 1885 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 18th July [1885]. It was so hot that I felt disinclined to do anything. I sat for an hour to Mr Vigor on the balcony before breakfast—& also a while after breakfast; the rest of the time I spent looking on while the Miss Holas worked & one of them kindly trimmed me a hat. After lunch read & rested, dined at 7. At 10 Henry, Mr Colnaghi & I went off in our gondola with all our provisions to the Edens’ house to join the party & go to the fête of the Redentore. Mr Malcolm ’s gondola which we had arranged to have was by some mistake not forthcoming– However Mrs Bronson lent hers. Css Canevaro & Maria Cozzi took Henry & Mr Colnaghi in their gondola. I took Lady Bagot & Mr Majoribanks. Miss Bronson took Miss Olga Ker & Mr Forbes his own cousin. Mr & Mrs Eden took Kate Bagot & Miss Ker & we all rowed off to the Giudecca & got there just in time to see the fireworks. There were quantities of gondolas & a great many of them were decorated with garlands & chinese lanterns. In the big boats—there was generally a table round wh the people sat & supped. After the fireworks we all met at a trysting place & it being too early for supper separating again & rowed abt to see the boats & the crowd. The bridges of boats were at usual places across the Grand Canal & the Giudecca for the foot passengers. The scene was a very animated one & there was singing & gaiety in every direction. At 12.30 our 4 gondolas met again & we tied them one to another & anchored & then prepared to sup by putting boards across the gondolas & so we had the appearance of being seated on each side of a long table. We had each taken different dishes & had champagne & champ: cup & were very merry. When we had eaten the gondoliers eat & at 1.30 we all started to our homes & I got to bed abt 2 o’cl.
